Biography

Kathy Blocki's passion for teaching excellence can be best seen through her students’ achievements. Whether it is transforming an autistic child’s fear of touching the medal on the flute into the freedom to express himself, or helping a gifted child win a competition playing the Ibert Concerto; her zeal to help every student reach their fullest potential is unmistakable. Her clinics on teaching the flute have been enthusiastically received at the Tennesse Music Ed. Assoc.2008 , Ohio Music Ed. Assoc. 2006, Texas Music Ed. Assoc. 2005, Inspirational Flute Masterclass, Greenville, SC 2005-2008, National Flute Association 2000-2008, IUSB Flute Festivals 2004 and 2003, Florida Flute Festival 2001, Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair 2005 and 2003, and colleges and universities. At the 2007 National Flute Convention she taught the Junior Masterclass, presented a clinic on tone production as a Conn/Selmer artist, and led a workshop entitled Syrinx: Inspiration, Integrity, and Interpretation. Publications include the Blocki Flute Method Book I and Teacher's Manual (winner of the NFA Newly Published Music Award): Blocki Flute Method Book II with Teacher's Manual and Ensemble Book, (co-authored with Rebecca Hovan), & Syrinx: Rhythmic Teaching Edition (licensed through the Theodore Presser Co). In 2008, she published two new duet books for the beginning and intermediate student. She is also the creator of the Great Beginnings for the New Flutist DVD, and patent holder for the Pneumo Pro Wind Director (a flute training tool). Though trained as a Suzuki Flute teacher, she now leads yearly teacher training classes for the Blocki Flute Method. Previously, she was a member of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Chautauqua Festival Orchestra, and a soloist with the American Wind Symphony and Elkhart Symphony. As a past faculty member of Goshen College, she taught flute, flute choir, and aural music skills. She holds degrees from IU Bloommington, Indiana School of Music and ASU, and has had the honor of studying with Eric Hoover, James Pellerite (past principle flutist with the Philadelphia Philharmonic), Samuel Baron, (past Julliard School of Music Prof.) and Bernard Goldberg (past principle flutist of Pittsburgh Symphony).
